Each of our kamishibai comes with a PIP, but what is a PIP I hear you cry?
PIP is an acronym for Planning Ideas Pack. Our PIPs provide a variety of activity ideas which are designed to complement the story of The Gingerbread Man. The activities are divided into the areas of learning and are compatible with the Early Years Foundation Stage or the Curriculum of Excellence. The PIPs aim to make planning easier for students, practitioners and teachers.
The PIPs gives you information on the history of kamishibai and how to use yours effectively. It also gives a history of the story of The Gingerbread Man and a book list. There are many different activities for you to try out as well as recipes and a song.
Here are some ideas you can try at home, at nursery or in the classroom after reading The Gingerbread Man.
Investigate whole spices, can the children match whole spices to the ground version? Ginger is an obvious choice but you could also try cloves, star anise, cinnamon and pepper.
You could try growing your own spices, ginger is an easy one to try and a great link to the story.

You can of course make gingerbread men, there is a great recipe in our PIP. You could try other global recipes from the Usborne Children’s World Cookbook by Angela Wilkes.
Developing the story
Do your children know the story well? Are they able to retell the story in sequence? If they are, they might enjoy retelling the story from a characters perspective. They could chose which character and work on how they might feel at different points in the story. They could use our kamishibai to share their version of the story.
To develop the activity further, the children could make their own kamishibai with help to record their retelling of the story or with an adult to annotate for them. They could then share their own kamishibai with others.
